Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
- 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
- 1/2 tsp salt
- For the filling: 1/2 cup softened butter, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tbsp cinnamon
- For the frosting: 4 oz cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Step 1: Activate the Yeast – In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, a tablespoon of the sugar, and the active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy and bubbly.
- Step 2: Mix the Wet Ingredients – Whisk the remaining sugar, pumpkin puree, melted butter, and egg into the yeast mixture until well combined and smooth.
- Step 3: Combine and Knead the Dough – Add the flour, pumpkin pie spice, and salt. Stir until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Step 4: First Rise – Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free spot for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Step 5: Roll and Fill – Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle evenly with the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.
- Step 6: Shape the Rolls – Tightly roll the dough into a log starting from the long edge. Use a sharp knife or unflavored dental floss to cut the log into 12 even slices. Place the slices in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Step 7: Second Rise – Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again for 30 to 45 minutes. This ensures they stay light and fluffy after baking.
- Step 8: Bake to Perfection – Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they are lightly golden brown on top.
- Step 9: Frost and Serve – While the rolls bake, beat the frosting ingredients together until creamy. Spread the frosting over the rolls while they are still warm so it can melt into the crevices.
