Ingredients
Scale
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Black decorating icing
- Purple, green, and orange frosting
- Candy eyeballs
- Edible gold glitter or stars (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats so your cookies don’t stick to the pan.
- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set this mixture aside for later use.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and white sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy. This usually takes about 2 to 3 minutes with an electric mixer.
- Beat in the egg and the vanilla extract. Make sure everything is well combined before slowly adding the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
- Roll the dough into rounded tablespoons and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are just lightly golden. Let them cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the cookies are completely cool, frost them with your purple, green, and orange icing. Use the black icing to create “spellbook” stitches or cauldron outlines. Press a candy eyeball into the center of your “book” cookies or “bubbling brew” cookies to complete the Hocus Pocus look.
