Ingredients
Scale
- 6 large Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Instructions
- Step 1: Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish or a similar sized casserole dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray to prevent the apples from sticking.
- Step 2: Season the Apples: In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar and cinnamon until every slice is evenly coated. Spread the apple mixture into the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
- Step 3: Add the Caramel: Warm your salted caramel sauce slightly so it is easy to pour. Drizzle the caramel evenly over the top of the apples. If you like extra salt, you can sprinkle a tiny pinch of sea salt over the caramel layer now.
- Step 4: Mix the Topping: In another bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, and sea salt. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the cold, cubed butter into the mixture. Keep going until it looks like coarse crumbs and the butter pieces are about the size of peas.
- Step 5: Assemble and Bake: Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the caramel-covered apples. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The topping should be golden brown, and the apple juices should be bubbling around the edges.
- Step 6: Cool and Set: Remove the crisp from the oven and let it sit for at least 10 to 15 minutes before serving. This allows the caramel and fruit juices to thicken slightly so it isn’t too runny when you scoop it out.
